KYLE Brotherton from Port Glasgow won a silver medal at the School Games National Finals at Loughborough University.

The 18-year-old, who is a former pupil of St Stephen’s High School and now a student at West College Scotland, was part of the Scotland team and competed in the boys’ wheelchair 800 metres. He came second in a time of 2.04.28.

He said: “I went out a wee bit too fast on the first lap, so on the second I was just dead but I managed to hold it -– it was a tough race. I’m glad I held on as this is the first medal I’ve won here. This is my fourth year at School Games and my first medal, so it’s taken a long time but it’s worth the wait.

“It’s a great event for young athletes coming up and it gives you good experience for other races.”

The School Games National Finals featured more than 1,000 athletes.
