Inverclyde Now Logo HUNDREDS Take Part In Kilmacolm Running Festival

18 September, 2018 | Local

MORE than 400 people took part in the annual Kilmacolm Running Festival hosted by Inverclyde Leisure’s Birkmyre Gym.

The Toddle Woddle, three-kilometre, 10-kilometre and half marathon events attracted 427 participants. Hundreds more friends and family were in the park to offer their support and enjoy the atmosphere.

The event was officially measured and licensed by Scottish Athletics and there was a great turnout from local athletics club with many runners from Greenock Glenpark Harriers, Inverclyde Athletic Club, Bellahouston Harriers and Kilbarchan Athletic Club all in attendance.

In the three-kilometre race for juniors, the first boy to finish was Tayven Adamson in 11:20; the first girl was Abi Hammerman in 11:26.

In the half-marathon, the male winner was Peter Tucker who finished in 1:13:15 and the female winner was Julie Beveridge in 1:29:08.

The male winner in the 10-kilometre race was John Bell, coming home in 32:16. The female winner was Ruth Fraser-Moodie who completed the distance in 39:38. Ruth also triumphed in this race 2016 and 2017.

There were also a couple of local sporting celebrities — Greenock Morton FC’s captain Jim McAlister and midfielder Chris Millar, above left, who presented the medals to every participant as they crossed the finish line and the trophies to the race winners.

There was a great atmosphere in the park with music and sound system provided by R-Mac Discos and barbecue supplied by Birkmyre Cafe by Nardini. Bottled water and bananas were supplied by Lidl Port Glasgow and bottles of Lucozade Sport were kindly donated by Lucozade.

David MacGregor of Inverclyde Leisure (IL) said: “We congratulate all the participants on their efforts and thank all who turned up for making it such a fun and friendly event.

“A massive thank-you to all the volunteers who helped with registration and marshalling duties; the event couldn’t go ahead without them and they also offered great encouragement to the participants. The volunteers were made up of IL staff and Birkmyre Gym members. The staff at Birkmyre Park Fitness Gym put in a lot of hard work, time and effort off-shift to prepare for the event and help make it a success.”

“We also thank our sponsors Unico, Firstpoint USA, mykalkanholiday, Kingsley Wood & Co, Lucozade, and Lidl.”
