GREENOCK Esplanade basked in spring sunshine on Saturday morning as 142 runners, including 21 first timers, completed the free weekly five-kilometre Greenock parkrun time trial.

Regular runner Stephen Hanley celebrated his 100th parkrun on Saturday with his proud parents who came along to watch him. Stephen’s first parkrun was in August 2014 and since then he has completed 83 runs in Greenock as well as 17 runs at other venues including in Canada and Denmark.

Stephen has also been a regular member of the volunteer team at Greenock, celebrating his 25th volunteer stint at the recent 200th event.

The weather conditions on Saturday were ideal for fast times with the first four runners home all dropping below the seventeen-minute mark. The first 101 runners to finish all did so in under 30 minutes.

Twenty-four participants managed to improve their best times. Regular Charlotte McKay,above, who takes part in parkrun every week with her daughter and granddaughters, was delighted to reduce her time by more than one minute and drop below the 30 minute mark for the first time.

William Laing shaved another few seconds from his personal best (PB) as he achieved his third PB in his last four attempts at Greenock parkrun.

Deborah McKenzie continued to improve her times with another PB this week to lower her time to 24:27. Deborah has now completed 74 runs at Greenock since her first attempt in November 2015.

Event organisers are looking forward to Saturday 19 May when Greenock parkrun celebrates its fourth birthday party.

Greenock parkrun welcomes participants of all abilities at 9:30 every Saturday morning at the Campbell Street end of the Esplanade.
