GOLF — Whinhill Triumph In Inverclyde Golf Team Contest

WHINHILL Golf Club were crowned Inverclyde Golf’s 2018 Team Champions after an excellent contest at Whinhill involving 12-man teams from the four golf clubs in Inverclyde.
The competition is held at one of the clubs in Inverclyde on a yearly rota basis with 2018 being Whinhill’s turn to welcome Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow Golf Clubs.
The competitors were treated to a course set up in great condition with the greens the best they have been all year on a dry day; ideal golfing conditions.
The format sees 12 four-ball better ball matches with each club playing two matches against the other three clubs.
The 2018 event ended up a two-horse race between Greenock and Whinhill with the difference between them coming in the two head-to-head matches between the clubs, with the home club edging both games narrowly.
Whinhill ended with six wins out of six resulting in six points with Greenock in second place with four points and Gourock finishing in third place with one and a half points.
Thanks goes to the clubs, especially team captains Barry Higgins (Gourock G.C.), David MacFarlane (Greenock G.C.), Evan Conway / Steven McLeod (Port Glasgow G.C.) and John Donald (Whinhill G.C.), for fielding teams.
Inverclyde Golf thank Whinhill Golf Club captain Paul Meechan and all at the club, especially the green-keeping, bar and catering staff, for hosting the event.
The last Inverclyde Golf event of the year is on Sunday (26 August) at Gourock Golf Club — the 2018 Inverclyde Golf Scratch and Handicap Open.
The competition is an 18-hole strokeplay competition for gent golfers who are members of Gourock, Greenock, Port Glasgow or Whinhill Golf Clubs.
Entry is £5 and there is a range of scratch and handicap prizes. Entries can be made online.
