GOLF — Whinhill Maintain Muirshiel Trophy SuccessWHINHILL Golf Club were crowned champions of the local Muirshiel Trophy league for the seventh year running.
The league is contested by the scratch teams of Gleddoch, Gourock, Port Glasgow and Whinhill Golf Clubs.
The competition was in the fourth year of its new format — with each team having a home game that consisted of two players from each club playing against the other three clubs all at the one course on the one night with the club with the highest points total, after the four games, being declared the winners.
The first match of the league season was hosted at Whinhill Golf Club with the home team getting off to a great start, winning all six of their matches.
This was followed up by another fine performance in the second match, held at Gourock Golf Club, with another five points won, creating a large gap between Whinhill and the chasing pack.
The third game was played in horrendous weather conditions at Gleddoch Golf Club and, although some games failed to finish, Whinhill had claimed enough points to claim the league with a game to spare.
There were many strong teams put out this year during the course of the season by all four golf clubs with a few new faces to go with the old regulars.
Whinhill Golf Club thank gents’ team captain John Donald and his team for their efforts in representing the club (with all of Whinhill’s best golfers keen to play in every match) and also thank Gleddoch, Gourock and Port Glasgow Golf Clubs for participating in an enjoyable league.
The club and its team members look forward to the matches and catching up with the other teams and their players in this long-established event.
Special thanks should also be made to all team captains for organising the matches in difficult circumstances after poor weather and call-offs.
