WHINHILL Golf Club’s top golfers battled it out over 36 holes for one of the 16 qualifying spaces in the knock-out stages of the Club Championship competition.

The last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played this week, culminating in the final which will be held over two rounds on Sunday. Thirty-six competitors took part in the event.

The best scores of the first round came from John Donald and Paul Jones — who between them share eight Club Championship titles — with level par 68s.

The best score of the afternoon came from former club champion Stephen Donald, a four over par 72 which, added to his solid score of 70 in the morning, resulted in him being crowned the winner of the Strokeplay Trophy.

The draw for the last 16 — which includes four former club champions — has come up with some interesting matches, with many of them too close to call.

The Club Championship promises to be an exciting affair and some excellent golf will be on shown this week at the club, with spectators welcome.
