PATRICK McCartney of Greenock Golf Club was crowned winner of the Greenock and District Junior Championship for the second year running.

The competition has been running since 1953 and is held by the four Inverclyde golf clubs on a rota basis, with Greenock Golf Club — presented in excellent condition — being the host club in 2018.

The contest was open to all junior golfers (under under the age of 18 before the 1 January 2018) who are members of the golf clubs in the Tail o’ the Bank area -– Cowal, Gleddoch, Gourock, Greenock, Lochwinnoch, Port Glasgow, Skelmorlie and Whinhill Golf Clubs.

The players had to contend with strong winds, making scoring tough. Patrick’s victory was sealed with a solid back nine of 38 (which was great golf, given the blustery conditions) added to a front nine total of 42 for a scratch score of 80.

He was seven clear shots from Alistair McNeil of Skelmorlie Golf Club whose consolation was in being declared the Under-15s champion with a fine gross score of 87.

The Handicap Section of the event was won by Ross McKay of Gourock Golf Club with an excellent nett score of 70.
