David McGhee, Handicap winner, receives the trophy from Port Glasgow Golf Club captain Nicky Rodger

PORT Glasgow Golf Club was the host venue for the 2019 Inverclyde Golf Gents’ Strokeplay Scratch and Handicap Open competition.

Graeme Steel (Scratch), pictured right, and David McGhee (Handicap), both of the host club, were crowned winners.

The competition has been running since 1976 and is held at the four Inverclyde golf clubs on a rotation basis.

Fifty-nine golfers took to the course which was set up in great condition, many of the competitors commenting on how good the greens are at present.

A rare 24-hour period of good weather leading up to the competition certainly helped — the conditions were dry for all competitors with a flat calm start only just changing to a light breeze as the event progressed.

A major highlight was Whinhill Golf Club member Myles Gallacher’s hole-in-one at the par-three, 11th hole.

Inverclyde Golf thank all at Port Glasgow Golf Club for hosting the event, in particular match secretary Steven McLeod for all his hard work in the running of the competition.
