WHINHILL Golf Club held its Open Trophy competition with home player Derek Church returning an excellent nett score of 61 to claim victory, edging out fellow Whinhill players John McGovern and Ross Pearson by one shot.

The weather for the most part was nice for the 130 competitors and this resulted in a number of very good scores. The course was set-up in great condition with the greens in the best state they have been in all year helped by the rain in the week leading up to the competition.

Derek produced a steady round that included 14 pars and four bogeys to ensure for a third year running a member of the Church family has won a Whinhill Open after his son Darren won the Junior equivalent in 2017 and 2018.

Both John and Ross have the consolation in receiving a significant cut to their handicaps and can be proud of their performances — 62 is a score which in most years would have won the competition.

Third place was shared by Joe Blyth, who made a brave defence of his title, and John Ellis, both on nett scores of 63.

Neil Caraher, a former Whinhill Golf Club Junior Champion, now of Cawder Golf Club won the Best Visitor award with a nett score of 67 just edging out Robert Johnstone of Greenock Golf Club courtesy of the better inward half.

John Donald claimed the Best Scratch prize thanks to a fine gross score of 68.

The club thanks Kilts4Less for their continued sponsorship of the event.
