Blackthorn 4-3 Sporting Lithgows

TEN-man Blackthorn maintained their 100 per cent record this season with a hard-fought but deserved victory.

‘Thorn took the lead when Davie Wiggins’s quick-thinking from a free kick allowed James Jordan to fire home on the half volley midway through the first half.

But Lithgows equalised a minute before the break with a fine strike from Darren McColl, ending the Blue Brazil’s outstanding clean sheet streak at 11 games.

The second half got off to a bad start for ‘Thorn as, within a minute of the restart, Wiggins was red-carded for hauling down McColl with Cassidy dispatching the resulting penalty kick.

However, the ten men rolled up their sleeves in an effort to preserve their unbeaten record and equalised when McCabe took advantage of a defensive miscue and slotted past the keeper.

Before long, Blackthorn were in front when Aaron Cameron nodded home Jordan’s corner kick and the lead extended when Cameron finished well at the near post for his 20th goal of the season.

The closing minutes were tense as Strachan pulled one back for Sporting in injury time but the league leaders prevailed to secure another important victory.

Thorn line-up: Koekenbier; McNeil, Harkin, Wiggins, Brunton; Hunter, Jordan, Bradley (McDermid), Smith (McCurdy); McCabe (Fry), Cameron.

This Sunday Blackthorn face Newark with a 12.30pm kick-off at Battery Park.

Supporters are advised that the forthcoming Scottish Cup tie versus Haven FC will take place on Saturday 2 February. Seats are available on the bus for the trip to Peterhead and anybody interested in going along should contact Chris for more information.

Blackthorn thank kit sponsor Koekibar (www.Koekibar.com) for continued support.
