2004s — Scottish Cup 3rd round:  Northstar 1 v 1 Port Boys (Orange) [3-1 after extra time]

THE team travelled to Aberdeen for a third round Scottish Cup tie and faced a stern test in Northstar. The game was played in a spirited fashion with both teams contesting every ball and playing some decent football.

Northstar took the lead from a free-kick 25 yards out giving keeper O’Neill no chance. Not to be outdone, the Port won a free kick of their own and, from a similar distance, Declan Byrne showed what he is capable of to make it 1-1.

The Port had a few players missing and had to shuffle the pack with Ingram slotting in to defence and Mcleay dropping to right mid. As the first half drew to a close the Port had a few chances to take the lead through Byrne, Rodgers and Brown.

The second half started with both teams going at it with the Port forcing some decent saves from the Northstar keeper but also being a bit fortunate at the back with Northstar hitting a post and the bar. With the second half coming to a close, the teams upped the ante and the game raged from one end to the other with both sides looking for a late winner.

Hwoever the match went into extra time and the first half of that started as the second period had finished with both teams really going for it with more chances for the Port who looked fantastic going forward at times but left the defence slightly exposed.

The Port were hit with a blow when Northstar caught out the defence down the left and squared the ball back for an easy finish to make it 2-1.

With tiredness setting in and a few boys picking up knocks, the Port rang the changes and again shuffled the pack going three at the back to try and salvage the tie. Unfortunately with the Port going forward at will and some tiredness creeping in, they lost a third goal.

This was hard lines on the Port who began their day at 8am and faced a long journey home.

Before the game, the boys were asked to go out enjoy themselves, give the coaches 100 per cent and leave it all out on the pitch, which they did.

The coaches couldn’t be prouder of the boys — they gave it their all but just came up short. The team congratulate Northstar and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

Scorer: Declan Byrne  |  Man of the match: Sean gault

Peter Ingram, Darren Mcleay and Sean Gault were asked to play out of position today and acquitted themselves very well.

The team thank sponsor Marcus Humphrey for sponsorship and Tauras Ops and SGN for sponsoring the new away strip.
