2004s Port Glasgow Boys’ Club (Black) 5 v Hillwood Thistle 5 (Hillwood win 3-2 on penalties)

THE boys entertained Hillwood Thistle in the David Mushet Cup, their first game since late November.

Both sets of players deserve huge credit for their performance in conditions that made it very difficult to play any kind of football, with the strong wind making it the proverbial “game of two halves”.

Port scored first when Darroch was found in the box and he drilled home to give the Port the lead. This lead didn’t last long however and Hillwood equalised shortly after. With the wind in Hillwood’s favour, the Port struggled to get out of their own half, but should have gone ahead after good play resulted in a shot going past the post.

Hillwood then took the lead when a long ball was missed and the forward tapped home make it 2-1. Hillwood dominated the rest of the half and added a further three goals, and probably should have scored a few more with Port really struggling in the conditions.

Following a strong half-time team talk, the Port came out for the second half with a determination to get back in the game. From the off they pressed Hillwood all over the pitch and got their reward when they were awarded a penalty following a defender’s challenge on Dillion. Up stepped McLaughlin to drill home to make it 5-2 and game on.

With their tails up, the Port continued to press and found themselves on the receiving end of two dubious decisions from the referee, who harshly disallowed two goals from the Port. However it was soon 5-3 when Baxter broke down the right and fired home high into the net.

It really was game-on when Temporal added a fourth a few minutes later and the Port continued to push. A few chances came and went and, just when it looked as though Hillwood would hang on, Smith bulleted home a corner from Darroch to make it 5-5.

With the referee stating just before the corner there were a few minutes of injury time to be played, he surprisingly blew his whistle for full-time and the match went straight to penalty kicks. Despite McDougall saving a Hillwood penalty, it wasn’t to be for the Port who missed three of their five penalties and Hillwood progressed to the next round.
