Blackthorn 3-1 Newark

DESPITE a slow start, Greenock and District Welfare League leaders Blackthorn made it nine wins from nine in league fixtures on Sunday.

The match against Newark was scrappy in the early stages but ‘Thorn found themselves unlucky not to be ahead with a couple of crosses that flashed across the face of goal but evaded everybody.

Newark had goalkeeper McCulloch to thank for a fantastic double save as the first half came to a close but, moments before the break, the Blue Brazil were ahead as Pete Fry smashed home from six yards. Having got ahead, ‘Thorn looked to push on after the break but were dealt a blow when Hanley headed home a corner kick to level the scores.

Jamie McCabe

However, Blackthorn gained a significant advantage when Sims was dismissed for a bad tackle on Cameron and, within minutes, ‘Thorn took the lead as McCabe headed home McGraw’s cross. With 10 minutes remaining, the victory was sealed as Cameron netted his 21st goal of the season.

The result preserves Thorn’s 100 per cent record and five-point lead with a game in hand over second-place Belleaire.

Blackthorn line-up: McNeil; McGraw (McAllister), Harkin, McDermid, Brunton; Hunter, Jordan, Fry (Bradley), Smith (Mullen); McCabe (McCurdy), Cameron (Mitchell).

This Sunday, Blackthorn face Chaplins in the McShane Cup with a 1.30pm kick-off at Gourock Park.

The forthcoming Scottish Cup tie versus Haven FC takes place on Saturday 2 February.
