Blackthorn 7-0 Clyde

GREENOCK and District Welfare League leaders Blackthorn Rovers maintained their 100 per cent record with a victory over a hard-working Clyde side.

The early stages were scrappy with the front-runners enjoying the bulk of the possession but failing to break down the Clyde defence. Indeed there was an element of fortune to the opener as centre-back Davie Wiggins’s cross-come-shot found its way into the net with the goalkeeper scrambling.

The goal gave ‘Thorn the boost they needed and, minutes later, fellow centre-half Andy Brunton made it 2-0 as Clyde failed to clear a corner kick. Midway through the half, Adam McGraw, returning to the starting line-up, linked well with Jordan and coolly slotted home before McGraw repaid the favour by playing in Jordan to net his 10th goal of the season.

Clyde could have been forgiven for throwing in the towel at half-time, being four goals down and with no subs to freshen things up, but to their credit continued to battle. However, the fifth goal arrived when Aaron Cameron held off a Clyde defender and fired a low, driven shot into the corner.

Next to get in on the action was Glenn Bradley as the wide man cut inside from the right and slammed high past the goalkeeper. Substitute Smith rounded off the scoring with his first touch, steering home from close range.

The Blue Brazil have now kept eight consecutive clean sheets between league and cup fixtures and are yet to concede in the league this season.
