Blackthorn Rovers 4-0 Newark Thistle

HAVING opened the season with an emphatic victory, Thorn went into this match full of confidence and looking to avenge the recent cup defeat suffered at the hands of Newark.

Blackthorn started brightly, controlling the possession throughout the first half but without many clear-cut chances. It looked like the lead had been taken shortly before the break when Cameron hit the back of the net, only for the ref to chalk it off for a foul.

The second half was more of the same with the deadlock unbroken until Jamie McCabe fired home from close range with 15 minutes remaining.

Aaron Cameron scores his seventh goal of the season

This provided the Blue Brazil with the confidence to push on and, a couple of minutes later, Cameron got his name on the score-sheet too before McCabe and Mullen padded the scoreline further.

Overall, it was a good performance and a strong finish to the match for a deserved victory that keeps Thorn atop the Greenock and District Welfare League table.

Teamline: Koekenbier; McNeil, Harkin, Wiggins, Brunton; Hunter, Jordan, Smith (Fry), McCurdy (Bradley); McCabe (Campbell), Cameron (Mullen).

This Sunday Blackthorn face Sporting Lithgows in the Ridgedoc Cup with a 2pm kick-off at Battery Park. All players are to report for 1.20pm.
