2004s Port Glasgow Boys Club Black 2 v Port Glasgow Boys’ Club Orange 1

PORT Glasgow Boys’ Club’s 2004 teams faced each other at at Parklea. Each side has submitted their view of the eagerly-anticipated encounter.

Report from 2004s (Black)

The Blacks never really got going, but managed to dig out a 2-1 victory. The first half started at 100mph with neither team actually putting their foot on the ball and playing any football. The first chance fell to the Blacks but McAteer’s cross evaded everyone and went out of play. The Oranges then produced a chance when a long ball caught the Black team’s defence out but McDougall raced from his goal to block with his legs and smother the loose ball.

The Blacks eventually took the lead when the Orange team’s keeper couldn’t hold on to a Scott free kick from distance and Smith fired home to take the lead. It was short-lived as the Blacks lost possession cheaply in their opponents’ half and they quickly released their forward who lifted it over McDougall and into the empty net to bring the match level.

The second half saw a change of formation for the Black team and this appeared to have an effect as they spent more time in their opponents’ half and exerted a bit more pressure which resulted in a few chances being created, including a header from Smith which was cleared off the line.

Neither keeper had any real saves of note to make and, just when it appeared the match would end in stalemate, the Blacks grabbed a late winner with 30 seconds to go. Scott’s throw-in on the left found Smith who muscled his way past the defender to slot home past the keeper.

Scorer — Smith (2)

Report from 2004s (Orange)

This was a cracking game with both teams giving it their all for three points and the all-important bragging rights. Both teams started well with the Blacks taking the lead from a free kick; keeper Arkless couldn’t hold on to the ball and the Blacks player reacted quickest to poke the ball home.

The Oranges equalised through Declan Byrne who ran on to a through-ball, rounding the keeper and calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net. With the clock ticking down, the Blacks won a throw-in down the right and somehow ended up with two players running through on goal leaving keeper Arkless with no chance.

This was another good game for the Oranges who were unlucky to lose a goal in the last minute again. The team is already looking forward to the rematch. Take all the positives from the game build on it and lets get right in about this weeks opponents.

Scorer — Declan Byrne  |  Man of the Match — Scott Mckay
