Inverclyde 255 for 4 8pts

Glasgow South 163 for 6 2 pts

INVERCLYDE passed 200 runs for the fourth time this season but missed out on full winning points as visitors Glasgow South held out for the draw.

Inverclyde’s opening batsmen had a good start to the innings until Greer Church was bowled by Aamir for 14 at 30 for 1 in the 6th over.

David Thomson joined Cammy Gunn in a good second-wicket partnership until Gunn was bowled for 46 in the 18th over at 83 for 2. He had been fortunate to have two lives, being caught and then bowled from two Shaikh no-balls.

Douglas Pilkington added 60 for the third wicket with Thomson until he was bowled for 28 at 143 for 3 in the 29th over. Captain Gareth James and Thomson then had a century partnership in 11 overs until Thomson was run out on the 39th over for 77, his highest score for the club, having played the essential anchor role in his innings.

James also scored his highest total for Inverclyde, finishing on 40 not out, as he and David Bruce took Inverclyde to 255 for 4 at the end of the 40 overs.

In reply, Bruce got an early breakthrough when Mahmood was caught by Gunn at mid-wicket, but Skeikh and Varma had a good partnership until Sheikh misjudged Bruce’s quicker ball and played on for 28. The visitors tried to increase the run rate in an attempt to win but Paul Singh picked up two wickets, both sharp catches by Chris Dick at cover, to restrict Glasgow South to 125 for 4 after 30 overs.

James then had Varma caught behind by David Mudie for 49 at 130 for 6, and visiting captain Ashraf decided to play out for the draw along with Shaikh, with the visitors finishing on 163 for 6 at the close of their innings.

Singh finished with 3 for 29, and Bruce 2 for 28, James 1 for 36, with Tom Watson bowling economically with only 29 runs being scored from his 10 overs, and Billy Hair, Chris Dick and Gunn also bowling well as Inverclyde used different bowlers to try to edge the victory.

Although not picking up full points, Inverclyde performed well in this match and the eight draw points moves them four points ahead of Bute at the foot of the table.
