THE captain of the victorious Great Britain Davis Cup tennis team, Leon Smith, is the guest speaker at this year’s Inverclyde Sports Personality Awards event.

It takes place in Greenock Town Hall on Friday 8 March, 6.30 for 7pm.

Leon, who was a coach to Andy Murray through his teenage years, as well as being a broadcaster, speaker and consultant, has more than 20 years’ experience of full-time professional tennis coaching, focusing on elite player development, high performance coaching and professional team management.

He remains the current Great Britain Davis Cup captain, with Great Britain becoming World Champions in 2015 for the first time in 79 years.

Leon said: “I am delighted to be coming to Inverclyde for this special event which I know has been electric in past years as the winners of the various categories of award are announced. I have also heard a number of good things in the development of tennis in Inverclyde with more to come and am glad that I am able to be there at this time.”

Chris Jewell for the organisers said: “It is magical to have Leon speaking at our awards event this year, coming on the back of such a momentous time in winning the Davis Cup and with such first-hand experience and knowledge of UK tennis. We are greatly looking forward to the occasion and we encourage people to be there to hear Leon speak and also to support their own Inverclyde sporting heroes as the winners are announced.”

The event includes a drink on arrival plus a three-course meal and tea and coffee. Tickets cost £35 and are available from Smith Sports at 36 West Blackhall Street in Greenock, telephone 01475 888555.

Chris added: “We are so grateful to our various sponsors who make this event what it is and also they help to create funds for a grant scheme we operate to help individual local sportspeople to be the best they can be at their chosen sport.”
