Inverclyde Now Logo BOAT Club Swimmers Enjoy New Year’s Day Clyde Dip

3 January, 2018 | Local

THE Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club (RWSABC) in Greenock held a New Year’s Day dip and swim to welcome in 2018.

Nineteen people entered the Clyde the Esplanade — 11 swimmers were wearing wet suits and the rest went in without.

There were good conditions for the swim with high water and a moderate breeze.

Three swimmers swam from the Boat Club to Madeira Street and back, a distance of three kilometres.

David Jenkins, who swims regularly at RWSABC, completed 800 metres without a wet suit.

The main hall of the club was open for spectators and hot drinks. Kayak cover was provided by kayakers from RWSABC.

An hour before the event members of Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club, above, were also down on the boat club beach for a quick dip.

The boat club swim was organised by RWSABC’s Open Water Swimming convener and is part of a range of open water swimming activities at the Royal West.

The swimming season proper will start in mid-April when there is swimming each Thursday and Friday evening.

RWSABC also offers other water sports including kayaking, rowing and sailing. For further information about activites at RWSABC visit www.rwsabc.co.uk.
