YOUNG Inverclyde AC athletes brought their track and field season to a close with a trip to Aberdeen to compete in the National Age Group Championships.

With a number of personal bests and first-time experiences at this level, IAC athletes can be pleased with their performances.

It was triple joy for Georgia and Harris Morrison with the sister and brother duo sharing three medals and two personal bests between them.

Georgia, moving up into the under-20 400 metres, rediscovered her mojo with a very impressive heat, clocking a personal best in the process. In the final, an aggressive run saw three athletes fighting their way on the final straight with a blanket finish, requiring a photo to decide that Georgia had won bronze with another sub-58-second run and a new club record of 57.73.

In the under-13 800 metres, Harris, pictured right, ran his usual controlled race, setting the early pace before three athletes broke free from the chasing pack. As the race approached the final bend, all three leaders held their form and pace with Harris securing bronze just outside his previous best. Harris was back in action a short time later, this time over 200 metres, after a smooth path to the final. Running a determined bend, Harris was one of the strongest over the home straight, crossing the line to win his second bronze and a new best over 200 metres.

Adam Hay created a new best over the 2000 metres steeplechase in the under-20 men’s race. Setting a fast pace early on, it was clear Adam was eager to make the race competitive as the athletes approached the water jump for the first time, normally a deciding factor in the race. However Adam, benefiting from previous races, has found a smooth action from the water jump allowing a more efficient race. His efforts were rewarded for a place just outside the medals but a new best by six seconds.

In the under-20 200 metres for men, Scott Hannaway stepped up age group, securing a place in the final after a solid performance in his heat. With one of the most contested races of the afternoon, Scott was speeding down the final straight with five other athletes all alongside each other. This row of athletes continued through the line with the placings covered by a tenth of a second, Scott finishing in a time equalling his lifetime best.

Aidan McGarrigle represented IAC in the field, contesting under-13 long jump. After launching himself on a number of occasions into the pit, he was rewarded with a fourth place.

Niamh McIntosh doubled up with a long jump and 100 metres in the very competitive under-15 girls age group and will benefit from her efforts going into the indoor season.

Lewis Hainey was another local athlete appearing in a national final, under-15 boys 800 metres. With a competitive first lap, Lewis raced well holding his position over the last 200 metres to take the tape just off his best. Lorien Carnegie, contesting her first National championships, will be delighted with her performances, reaching the 200 metres semi-final in a new best.

Other young athletes benefiting from the championship arena were Tayven Adamson, who created a massive best while winning his 1500 metres race, and Leona Conway, who now has a new target for 800 metres.

Mark McLaughlan was unlucky in his 200 metres and 400 metres in the under-20 men’s races, just missing final spots by less than tenth of a second on each occasion. He now turns his focus to winter training.
