Inverclyde Now Logo AMERICAN Football — Long-Awaited First League Match For Inverclyde Goliaths

INVERCLYDE Goliaths travel to take on the highly-favoured Dumfries Hunters in their inaugural American football league match on Sunday.

A day which has been over two years in the making, it will see a senior, kitted American football team from Inverclyde, compete in the British leagues for the first time since the 1990s.

Goliaths are on familiar terms with Sunday’s opponents, facing them twice during their associate procedures to enter the league, coming out on top on both occasions.

But it’s a record that bares little relevance to the Goliaths, as they gear up for Sunday’s fixture, with player Kevin McAdam stating: “It’s in the past. The previous games against the Hunters were important to us as a part of our league entry requirements, but to the Hunters, it was merely a pre-season friendly. We’re expecting a much tougher test this Sunday.”

The excitement for the season opener has been ever-present at Goliath practices, since the announcement that their league status had been approved in late 2018.

General manager Brian McFerren said: “Inverclyde is ready to go, and it has been a long time coming! We’ve been working hard over the last few years, getting everything ready to play in the BAFA (British American Football Association) leagues: the hours of paperwork, months of recruitment and of course, year of training.

“The entire team is counting down the hours to our first ever game day. I couldn’t be happier that we have the opportunity to put the town on the map of British American football once again, and welcome the support of our local residents.”

Confidence is high in the Inverclyde camp; something that they hope will grow in the coming months.

Inverclyde Goliaths vs Dumfries Hunters takes place on Sunday 21 April at The David Keswick Centre, Dumfries, with the match kicking off at 2pm.

Training resumes the following Thursday, from 7-9pm, and Sunday, from 12 to 3pm at Greenock Wanderers Rugby Club, Fort Matilda. No experience necessary, and all fitness levels welcome.
