The 41-year-old was detained by officers at St Mary's Church, Patrick Street around 11.15pm.  He is expected to appear at Greenock Sheriff Courrt today.

One of the building's windows was broken. Nothing was taken.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old man was arrested at flats in Margaret Street around 5.30pm for allegedly being in an area where it could be reasonably inferred that he intended to commit theft.

Finally police were called regarding three people -- two men and a woman -- behaving suspiciously near flats in Newark Street around 8.25pm. No one was traced. Any witnesses are urged to call 101.
