NEW Exhibition Of George Wyllie Sculptures

14 October, 2024 | Local

THE Wyllieum museum and gallery in Greenock is staging its second exhibition.

The venue on the Waterfront is a new space dedicated to the work and legacy of one of Scotland’s most beloved artists, George Wyllie.

The second show is exclusively dedicated to Wyllie’s three-dimensional works which could be considered the very core of his practice.

Open to the public from 15 October, A Wee Multitude of Questions: George Wyllie Scul?tures: includes well-loved items and some pieces which have never been displayed in Scotland before.

From the basement studio of his home on Tower Hill in Gourock, Wyllie created works such as HMS Discreet which draws attention to the nuclear submarines that had surfaced in his beloved Clyde.

He also made playful assemblages inspired by less controversial local subjects like his Para Handy series which drew on the beloved book and TV adaptations of Neil Munros’s steamboat stories.

Chair of The Wyllieum Board, Michael Dale, said: “We are delighted to show a range of works by George, giving a snapshot of his work but also the times he lived and worked in. We look forward to welcoming audiences this autumn to engage with the works and see them in our new gallery spaces.”

The Wyllieum is housed in Greenock Ocean Terminal Visitor Centre. Wyllie died in 2012, shortly after his 90th birthday.
