Inverclyde Now Logo SPARE iPod Appeal To Give People With Dementia The Soundtrack Of Their Life

3 August, 2017 | Noticeboard

GREENOCK Rotary Club is appealing for donations of spare iPods so they can give local dementia sufferers ‘playlists for life’.

The club has joined up with West College Scotland for the project which will benefit people in local care homes.

The Playlist for Life charity was founded by broadcaster Sally Magnusson and aims to make it possible for every person with dementia to have access to a playlist of personally meaningful music.

Someone’s ‘playlist for life’ is the songs or pieces of music that make up the soundtrack of their life — for example lullabies their mother sang to them, their first slow dance, or music that reminds them of special holidays or special people. Each playlist is unique to the individual and can be kept on a device such as an iPod so that it is ready to play at any time.

There is mounting evidence that if people with dementia are offered frequent access to music, in which their past experiences and memories are embedded, it can improve their mood, their awareness, their ability to understand and think and help to give them back some of their sense of identity and independence.

Anyone with an old iPod they are willing to donate is asked to call Kenny Melville on 01475 781881 or 07484 787188.
