GREENOCK and District Sea Cadets are holding an open day on Saturday (8 April).

It takes place at their Baker Street headquarters in Greenock from 10am to 4pm. The unit — TS Gold Rover — is recruiting boys and girls aged 10 to 18 years.

Young people take part in activities as diverse as shooting, kayaking, sailing, abseiling, and archery.

They learn first aid, leadership skills, catering, engineering and even computer programming.

Lieutenant Commander Jim Hearl, commanding officer of TS Gold Rover, said: “We are thrilled to take this opportunity to open our doors to showcase our unit and the achievements of our young people.

“We are looking to recruit at present and invite all young people between the ages of 10 and 18 to attend our open day and experience firsthand what we have to offer.

“Although the focus is primarily on water-borne activities to provide nautical adventure based on the traditions and customs of the Royal Navy, we are nevertheless committed to supporting young people in an effort to provide ‘the best possible head start in life’ and to help them attain a positive destination.”

Parents are also very welcome to go along and have a chat with cadets and staff.
