A LOCAL MSP’s office has undergone a creative transformation after members of an art group began displaying their work on it walls.

The art work is s on show at MSP Stuart McMillan’s constituency office in Grey Place, Greenock and is by users of Moving On, a local service which offers free and confidential support to people recovering from substance and alcohol abuse.

Moving On runs classes, led by tutor Annie McKay, to promote wellness through art.

Annie said: “Some members of the art group enjoy reminiscing about school and how they enjoyed art as a child while others are really discovering a true passion for art later in life. As a group, we are always trying to learn new skills and build upon techniques to further progress, not just in the classroom, but in wider society.

“I feel it is important that we all work with and learn from each other which fosters a really warm environment to teach and learn in. The great thing about the art group, in fact Moving On as a whole, is you get to see people progress and develop over time as they build on their confidence and often increase their sense of self-worth.

“Members of the art group are always delighted to see their work exhibited and are happy to discuss their work, talking about what they’ve learned. I couldn’t be happier now the art work from our group is being displayed in the office of our local MSP.”

Stuart, who is a member of the management board of Moving On, said “Since being elected constituency MSP, I have been thinking of ways to make my office welcoming, while trying to open it up as much as possible to be a place that everyone in the community feels they can visit and feel part of.

“Annie and her art group are the first to exhibit work in my office and they will be looking to change the paintings every few months. The work itself is of a really high standard. We have paintings of Greenock’s industrial heritage, the Inverclyde coast line and family emblems among others.

“I am keen to invite other worthwhile project to use the wall space in my office.”
