CYCLISTS are being urged to enter Pedal the Park, a 100-kilometre road cycling challenge through the countryside of Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and North Ayrshire.

Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, along with Ride 63 Community Cycling Club, are hosting the event which is now in its third year and takes place on Sunday 23 April, leaving at 8.30am from Castle Semple Visitor Centre in Lochwinnoch.

The route is expected to roughly follow the Regional Park’s boundary and features two challenging climbs, one out of Greenock, up the Shielhill Glen Road and the other over the Dalry Moor Road. The food station will again be at Greenock Cut Visitor Centre where there will also be mechanical support.

It has been graded by British Cycling as ‘Level 3 Difficult’, taking into account overall elevation and distance.

Pedal the Park is a non-competitive sportive in which individuals can challenge themselves and join the camaraderie of other cyclists sharing the experience.

There was a 100 per cent increase in participant numbers between the first and second years and organisers are hoping year three will attract around 300 cyclists which would mean a charity donation of £1500, beating last year’s £1,210. More than 160 riders are signed up so far.

Online entry for Pedal the Park is through British Cycling and costs £15. Entry forms can also be downloaded from the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park website – www.clydemuirshiel.co.uk/downloads. These must be handed in and the fee paid at Castle Semple Visitor Centre in advance of the event.

Entry also includes a cycling goody bag with medal and food station supplies.
