Firefighters at the scene on Thursday morning

POLICE say the current restrictions on the A8 in Greenock following a building fire will continue over the weekend.

Traffic is running in both directions in a contraflow on the westbound carriageway past the scene of the blaze at the McKechnie Jess food processing premises.

Inspector Julie Davenport from Greenock Police Office said: “Public safety remains our priority and the current road closures will remain in place over the weekend.”

The contraflow is between Gibshill Road and Ardgowan Street.

Road users are warned they may experience delays.

The B788 Kilmacolm to Greenock road — which is closed for some weeks for water pipe installation — was opened specially on Wednesday because of the traffic problems but has now been closed again.
