GOLF -- Whinhill Enjoy 9-Hole, 3-Club Challenge
WHINHILL Golf Club recently held a centenary 9-Hole 3-Club Challenge competition as part of its centenary celebrations – adding a fun and enjoyable event into the competition calendar.
This competition was played regularly in the early days of the club’s existence -- the centenary season was a fitting year to bring it back into the fixture list.
The nine hole aspect of the competition allowed Paul Jones to finish his round in under four hours and allowed Sean McGinlay to make it back to the clubhouse in time to catch the ‘Eastenders Omnibus’.
The early favourite for the competition was Alan Hendry until word spread that his three chosen clubs for the competition were a ‘Ping Golf Scottsdale’ putter, a ‘Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select’ putter and an ‘Odyssey Golf White Ice 2-Ball’ putter.
The competition was slightly demeaned with the late withdrawal of current ‘Churm Trophy’ champion Calum Doull who felt that having to have three clubs in a competitor’s golf bag was “totally unnecessary”.

Whinhill Golf Club Centenary Captain Dan McAulay, right, presents the trophy to the winner Ian McCauley
The winner of the competition was Ian McCauley with a nett score of 30.5 (two and a half under his handicap). Ian, who was playing off 5.5 (half of his 11 handicap), returned a far better scratch score for nine holes than he did the day previous while playing with a full set of clubs!
Gus Dalgleish took second place with a nett score of 32 despite having more refreshments in his bag than clubs! Third place went to Stephen Donald, the lowest handicap golfer in the field, who returned the best scratch score of the day – a two over par 35 for a nett score of 33.
David Adams and Mitchell Ogilby were the only two competitors to return Magic ‘2’s’ despite Mr. Adams not having a putter as part of his selection of three clubs! Congratulations go to Ian and to all who took part in the competition. As it was enjoyed by all, it will continue to be a golfing and social fixture in the calendar for years to come.
Whinhill Golf Club thank honorary member Jim Gallagher for donating the Centenary 9 Hole 3-Club Challenge Trophy.
