COUNCILLORS Asked To Back Sports Awards Funding
INVERCLYDE Council are being asked to agree £5,000 of support for the district’s sports personality awards after its main sponsor went into liquidation.
Councillors on the policy and resources committee are being asked to approve the “one-off emergency” funding following a request from council leader Stephen McCabe.
A report to the committee states that the sponsor went into liquidation in 2011. The awards had previously publicised a three-year sponsorship deal from construction company ERDC Group which went into administration in November 2010.
Nominations for the awards were sought some weeks ago and a list for the public to vote for has already been chosen.
The Inverclyde Sports Personality of the Year Award is described as a “prestigious event” which takes place in Greenock Town Hall supported by a number of organisations including Inverclyde Leisure, The Greenock Telegraph, New Horizons Marketing and Inverclyde Sports Council.
Proceeds from the event will be used to support young Inverclyde sportspeople with a view to them competing at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The report states: “Sadly the main private sector sponsor went into liquidation in 2011. The event is due to take place on 24 February 2012 and in order to ensure that the event can take place as planned it is proposed that the council replace the former private sector sponsorship of £5,000 for one year only.
“This funding shall be met from the Council’s Contingency Fund and will allow time for Inverclyde Leisure and other partners to identify and secure sponsorship for future years’ events.”
