READER Talkback -- Dog-Fouling In West End Of Greenock (Three Comments)
Can I please, through your website, ask those dog owners who do not pick up their dog's mess to please do so? The situation in the West End of Greenock is getting out-of-hand! Thank you!

Phone Environmental Services -- 01475 714200. I had to do this and they put up a no fouling sign. If you know when it is being done, let them know and they will keep a lookout for the culprit. If it is in multiple places tell them where. Obviously they cannot be there all the time, but if you can narrow it down it would help. Talking to the people who allow their dogs to do this will do no good. Only a fine will, and remember it is an offence for them to let their dog foul in the street -- they know this anyway and just don't care.

I agree with the above comment! The block from Campbell Street to Robertson Street on Brisbane Street is diabolical! We have to constantly dodge dog mess when walking on this block. Possibly people living around the block who take their dogs for a round-the-block walk and, by the time they get to Brisbane Street, the dogs are ready to do their business. It's absolutely disgusting! Please take carrier bags with you when you walk your dog as it takes very little effort to remove your dog's mess from the pavement where people need to walk without stepping on this smelly mess. We have to walk with our eyes peeled to the pavement as it can be like the dodgems trying to avoid stepping on it. At times there can be so many dollops on this one block alone.
From Robertson Street to Nelson Street is normally okay on this stretch of road but the aforementioned block is a major problem. It's not just one dog owner either. Other people seem to see the mess left and think it's okay for their dog to add to it! Going by the size of the dog poo it looks as if there is a large and small dog whose mess is just left lying, possibly more than two dogs.
To the owners: Please consider other people walking on pavements and who do not like to turn up at school or work with their shoes smelling of dog poo! As you are aware, the smell is so difficult to get rid of. When my children were younger and stood in dog poo, I used to have to take their shoes outside with a bottle of disinfectant to try too remove the remainder of the smell. It's so much easier if the owners bend down and pop the poo into a carrier bag and drop it in a bin. On the subject of bins, these are lacking in the West End of Greenock, possibly other areas too.
To Inverclyde Council: Inverclyde Council need to address this and provide more bins, especially with the doggy bin at the top of them as some have now, as bins have been lacking on this street for so many years. Also Inverclyde Council have had parts of the pavement painted with the blue dog logo and the warning of a fine (around two years ago) but this still did not prevent people leaving their dog's mess lying on the pavement so the next step is to have the owners caught walking away after their dog has done its business and not attempting to pick it up.
Many people will not be aware of this problem as they drive from A-B but I'm sure will still back the call for people to keep this mess off their pavements. There are still lots of us who walk to work or into town etc so the pavements are well used. Please be considerate to others and respect the area you live in also.
