THE Scottish Youth Parliament will meet in Inverclyde this spring.

Inverclyde Council’s Education and Lifelong Learning Committee has agreed to host the March 2011 Sitting at Inverclyde Academy.

Provost Michael McCormick will also host an evening civic reception and award ceremony in Greenock Town Hall.

Convener, Councillor Iain McKenzie said: “This is an opportunity for people in Inverclyde to see first hand young people taking part in discussion, debate and the decision-making process on issues that affect them. It will also highlight the hard work that is going on in Inverclyde to create a positive environment for young people to be involved in making those important decisions.”

The Scottish Youth Parliament began in 1999 aiming to listen to young people, understand what issues are important to them and to campaign to try to make Scotland a better place for young people. Members (MSYP’s) are elected young people aged between 14 and 25 representing different areas and voluntary organisations from across Scotland.

Every Member of the Scottish youth Parliament can become a member of one of 10 Subject Committees which take responsibility for a specific area of policy such as Health and Well-Being, Social Justice and Equalities.

Up to three Sittings of the Scottish Youth Parliament are hosted by local authorities each year.
