GOING back to school wasn’t so bad for some Greenock pupils – they started the new term by each receiving a state of the art Apple iPad.

Cedars School of Excellence in Ardgowan Square has spent around £60,000 providing all 106 children – from primary one through to fifth year – with one of the latest tablet computers.

Senior teacher Andrew Jewell said: “As far as we know we are the only school in the world to provide an iPad for every pupil. The children are absolutely delighted. Children are using this technology all the time now. It is quite a learning curve for the staff.”

Older pupils will be allowed to take the devices home and use them to do homework which they will email in. They will also use them to read e-books. All the entries for the school’s next annual art competition will be done on the iPads.

Andrew added: “There are all sorts of educational benefits.”

The fee-paying independent Christian school had initially looked at the idea of using the smaller Apple iPod Touch devices but felt the screens were too small and they couldn’t be used for word processing. Just days after staff discussed the plan, Apple announced the bigger iPad.

Cedars School’s computing teacher Fraser Spiers was the driving force behind the idea. He is also a software developer.
