BOYS' Brigade Notes -- Great Glen Walkers
1st Greenock -- A group of boys from 1st Greenock Boys’ Brigade challenged themselves to a walk, a very long walk, in fact a 74-mile walk! The boys got themselves organised (some more than others) and departed from Fort William on Sunday 10 October bound for the Highland Capital of Inverness to face the challenge of the Great Glen Way, looking forward to a good week of friendship and fundraising.
The early days of the walk were to prove no more than a good day’s walking for them as they journeyed to Gairlochy, Laggan and Invermorriston and even managed to sneak a visit to the Commando Memorial. Thanks to the use of a back-up minibus the team enjoyed good hostel accommodation and everyone piled into one of the local hostelries to watch Scotland take on Spain at football. Wednesday saw the group set off for Drumnadrochit on what proved to be one of the hardest days walking as the Way climbed high above Loch Ness. Before they knew it Thursday morning arrived which was the last leg of the journey, an 18-mile stretch into Inverness. The goal was the assembly point in Inverness Castle beside the impressive statue of Flora MacDonald.
The boys raised £750 for Inverclyde Family Contact Centre, Scottish Children’s Hospice and a smaller amount for their company funds. The boys thanks the small businesses and members of Ardgowan Parish Church who helped with donations and who, in no small measure contributed. to the success of the venture.
2nd Gourock -- Company section boys, Junior section boys and any parents are once again invited to be Christmas posties this Sunday -- all assistance is much appreciated. Christmas cards are delivered for the congregation of St John’s to Gourock addresses by the youth organisations. The Boys’ Brigade plays a vital role in this and the officers thank everyone for their continued help, and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Dates To Remember -- Tuesday 28 December – Company Section Table Tennis at St Andrews, Port Glasgow, at 4pm.
