TOM Stevenson's Photo-Blog -- Remembering The Free French Forces

I can just remember when the Cross of Lorraine was put up on Lyle Hill after the end of World War Two, writes Tom Stevenson. It was a challenging civil engineering task. However, I only recently became aware that this imposing monument was designed, built and financed by the Free French Forces who were based and sailed from Greenock during the period 1940 to 1945. These men ventured into the U-boat infested North Atlantic with the general objective of supporting the Allied struggle against Nazi tyranny but in particular they were dedicated to freeing their occupied nation, a cause for which many gave their lives.
