Clyde Coastguard Report -- Monday 12 December 2011

9.57am -- Clyde Coastguard investigated a report from a member of the public of a possible hand-held distress flare about half a mile from the paper mill at Irvine. A Royal Navy helicopter exercising in the area and an RNLI Lifeboat on passage through the area at the time of the report confirmed that there was nothing untoward.

1.04pm
-- Clyde Coastguard tasked Islay all-weather Lifeboat to assist a 10-metre fishing vessel after creels became tangled around its propeller off Colonsay Pier. The Lifeboat safely towed the fishing vessel and its three occupants to Port Askaig.

3.45pm -- Clyde Coastguard were notified by an off-duty member of staff that a kite surfer had got into difficulties on Barassie Beach. The surfer managed to get ashore, tired but otherwise unharmed.

5.27pm
-- Clyde Coastguard tasked Helensburgh and Greenock Coastguard Rescue Teams to assist police with a person threatening to jump from Erskine Bridge on the River Clyde. The person was recovered and taken into police custody.

6.07pm -- Clyde Coastguard received a call from Clydeport Operations reporting the 136-metre container vessel Encounter with 12 persons onboard had gone aground off the Esplanade at Greenock. Clydeport tasked two tugs to the vessel. Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team and Clyde Sector Manager were tasked to the incident. The vessel refloated on the incoming tide and was taken alongside to Greenock Ocean Terminal.

8.18pm
-- Clyde Coastguard received a call from Strathclyde Police reporting that a member of the public had seen what he thought to be a person falling from Erskine Bridge near Old Kirkpatrick. Helensburgh Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to search the area along with Strathclyde Police. After a thorough search, nothing was found and all units were stood down. This was considered a false alarm with good intent.
